Today we visit the Greek island of Lesvos, where Australian born photographer Carla Coulson (who now lives in France by the way) stayed in a lovely guest house owned by Australian author Claire Lloyd and her British partner, artist Matthew Usmar Lauder.
In 2007 this couple left behind the busy, glamorous London arts scene to explore a new, more simple way of life on the island of Lesvos.
They bought a small house in a village far from the usual tourist haunts and then another house on the edge of the same village.
Here they have discovered the joys of a close community, the rhythms of the days, weeks and seasons bound up with the natural world around them.
In the spirit of hospitality that is so much a part of the Greek island culture, Claire and Matthew offer holidays in the second of their village houses, Ken’s Spiti.
A gorgeously simple retreat named after Claire’s father.
With white walls, exposed beams, and a roof terrace looking out towards the Aegean sea and the incomparable Greek sunsets.
Visit the guest house’s website for more information and to make reservations.
If you want to learn more about the beauty of the island and Claire’s life here, you can read Claire’s book ‘My Greek Island Home’.
Illustrated by Claire’s stunning photographs of faces and flowers, countryside and beaches, details and impressions, colour and light, it tells the story of how she and Matthew have settled here and found friendship and renewed creativity.
