New Portraits by Francoise Nielly

A number of wonderful new portraits by French painter Françoise Nielly who is absolutely prolific, posting a new works to her website every couple of days it seems. Nielly grew up in the South of France and now lives and works near Montmartre in Paris and her latest exhibition was at Villa del Arte in Barcelona earlier this year.

here's what I think about re: portraits - ok - if it's of yourself or someone you know or have a personal interest, like Beethoven or something - remember the little busts in plaster on every kids bookshelf? Otherwise - why would I want a portrait of soneone I don't know or care about, and huge and extremely strong color! on my wall! I know it's a basic human interest in art to draw the human figure. and yes, I do portraits, mostly little ones. even did one of Obama - in person! he liked it.

if not 'who' then it's just about the quality of the painting. how many really understand that? not many, really. it's just a picture of someone, what's the connection? sure, i'll take a Reynolds, but i'd sell it. example: Picasso in cubist period painted figures. or later portraits of his wives. nice paintings. the cubist is about 'art ideas'. the later portraits were about the people. so yeh, you can track back to the art historical importance of having a portrait of one of Picasso's wives, but really who cares?
