The Conductor’s Gestures

Sep 04 2012 ·  Comments · Art

Bach / Stokowski – Toccata & Fugue in d minor, conductor Paul Mauffray

Music to My Eyes Competition of MATT (Society of Hungarian Graphic

Designers and Typographers)
The Conductor

The conductor is a performer, a leader of bigger bands. Who leads the orchestra with passes. These gestures are as essential as the sign language for the deafs. The conductor’s movements have exact and important denotation. He is able to tell through his gestures the composition’s substance and the way the music should be played.

He defines the rhythm and the melody by his hand movements. He draws an abstract creation in the air with his hands with the goal of communication and that is how he becomes the composition visually and formally in the end. This way he creates a fusion between musician, artist and designer.

The conductor holds in his right hand the wand, this dictates the tempo and the rhythm’s character. The left hand draws the musical lines, the melodies and the intensity, indicates the moment of the entry, the enhancements, the fortifications, shows when to soften and when to attenuate.
